FUTURE PERFECT: Shah Rukh says the next film he does will have an even bigger platform.For those of you who haven’t had enough of Shah Rukh Khan already, we have more! CNN-IBN’s Rohit Khilnani caught up with the King Khan at yet another promotional event for his big Diwali release Om Shanti Om and quizzed him on the publicity blitzkrieg surrounding his film.

Rohit Khilnani: It is the first time you have gone all out to promote a film. Can we say you are the best producer?

Shah Rukh Khan: Not really. What happens is that every time, the bar is set a little higher. Like Don, for example, required people to come and see the styling. Om Shanti Om has come in at a time when it’s important that people come in hordes and see it during the celebration period. So depending on the kind of film, I go out and promote it. The next film that we do will have a bigger platform, thanks to you people, thanks to Nokia, communication, internet and networking now.

Rohit Khilnani: Has the problem with multiplexes and distributors been sorted now?

Shah Rukh Khan: Yes, it has been sorted out. Like the Godfather, I made them an offer they could not refuse. So I just want to tell everyone that advance booking is open now so please rush to a theatre near you and quickly buy all the tickets for Om Shanti Om and make it the biggest hit of the century.

Some may find it amusing, but it is true that Farah Khan opted for Deepika Padukone (in OM SHANTI OM) because she wanted to project her as a huge 70’s superstar like Hema Malini.

Keeping that in mind, there is a take-off on the Dharmendra-Hema starrer, DREAM GIRL (1977), with Deepika playing Shanti Priya, an actress of the 70’s in the upcoming OM SHANTI OM, and is humorously titled, DREAMY GIRL!

It has also been heard that Farah Khan believes that Deepika has the poise and grace of the South Indian actress and resembles her. It seems to be the right choice by Farah as Deepika is clearly drawing all the eyeballs in the promos being aired.

The punch line of Om Shanti Om says that to finish your dream, one lifetime is not sufficient. Do you believe that?

What I believe in is that for every man or woman, dreams are essential. This is why why I work in films — to urge others to dream.

A person gets all the opportunity in his or her lifetime to fulfill those dreams. I believe that God gives everyone the opportunity to fulfill them.

I also believe in luck, destiny and the good wishes of people. The bigger the dream, the bigger and better life would be.

If I were to talk about this in context of Om Shanti Om, then I would say that when matters relate to a film, they carry this garb of simulation.

The film talks about reincarnation — how one can fulfill one’s dreams in the next lifetime. If one believes in reincarnation, that is.

But I think that you should fulfill your dreams in this lifetime only.

‘My abs have given me a sort of enthusiasm to do action movies’

What made you get those six-pack abs? Farah (Khan, director) wanted me to dance without my shirt.

My son thought that I had become a little fat. But he doesn’t think so any more. Personally, I think a healthy body results in a healthy mind.

I’m feeling very good about this and it has given me a sort of enthusiasm to do action movies. A few years ago when I suffered from back pain, I was depressed as I was unable to do most things. But now, I am stronger.

Did you strain yourself to get those abs?

I don’t eat much so it was not difficult to control my diet. But yes, I had to work hard for two-three months. I was working out regularly for the past three years but before shooting the song Darde Disco (where he shows off his abs), I had to control my eating habits. I had to eat amino and fat burners. Now that my pants have loosened up, it really feels good (laughs).

A few days ago, I had gone swimming with my children. When I came out of the pool, I thought I had turned into a dude! Whenever I see myself in the bathroom mirror, I feel happy. I hope people like me in the song.

‘I play a superhero in the film. You will see me flying as Mohabbatman’

Tell us about Om Shanti Om. Farah is a very talented and diverse person. She started of with choreography, and then shifted to direction and now she even writes.

There are so many aspects of filmmaking which she knew even when she was kid as her father produced films then. Now her brother too is busy making films.

OSO has the theme of reincarnation, drama, comedy, songs, dances, plus my six packs. As a producer, I think that the film has turned out to be a beautiful one. Arjun Rampal, Shreyas Talpade and Deepika Padukone have fantastic roles in the film.

There are many shades to your character in the film.

I play a junior actor who keeps getting roles on an intermittent basis. Just to impress the actress, he tells her that he is a rising star from the South Indian film industry and that his name is Omswami.

His favourite line in the film is ‘Atti Patti Katti‘. (Art director) Sabu Cyril Sir and (cinematographer) V Manikandan Sir were working with us, and whenever they would hear the line, they would get upset! But I retaliated by saying that I don’t know South Indian languages and also since the character not from South India, it was okay with me.

I also play a superhero in the film. You will see me flying as Mohabbatman.

So we get to see you in your underwear?

Yes, you will see me wearing underwear over my tights!

There is this whole sequence in the film about my underwear. I say in the film that it does not suit me whereas my designer retorts that even Superman and Spiderman wear their underwear in a similar fashion. Then, I am convinced.

Have you ever told Farah that your heroines are always taller than you?

I think with every passing year, I am getting shorter so all the heroines are automatically taller than me. Please don’t take it the wrong way, but the taller the heroine, the better it is for you. You can talk to them with your head held high. This is my only solace.

But I have never felt awkward because of my height.

Was Deepika Padukone starstruck while shooting?

I don’t think so. She was a professional model before she began acting in films. I respect her a lot because she is the daughter of (badminton legend) Prakash Padukone. I have been a huge fan of her father.

Deepika is absolutely wonderful and stunning. She is a woman with her own mind and talent.

How did you address her on the sets?

I have always acted for kids. Now, I have reached a stage where I am working with them (laughs).

But jokes apart, she may be half my age but there is no age bar in love. There is just no boundary. Love can happen in a way we saw in DarrBaazigar or even Don.

With Chak De! India declared a hit, do you feel half the battle is won for OSO?

No, I don’t agree. Every film has its own destiny. I am really happy that people liked Chak De! India. The role of Kabir Khan was different and I was convinced that I had acted better in that film. But then, I always feel like this in every film of mine.

Chak De! India was a gritty film while OSO is an entertaining one. Both are different.

Shah Rukh Khan is pretty excited about his upcoming home production. The actor says it is not a spoof on Hindi cinema of the 70s but is actually about reincarnation. “The Om of 70s is Om Prakash Makhija, a struggling actor trying to make it big while the Om of 2007 is Om Kapoor, a superstar who is not talented. The film is very dramatic and has a lot of comedy. The music is good too. Farah has got a good ear for music, unlike me, and Vishal-Shekhar have worked hard on the music. It’s wild and fast music and young people are going to enjoy it,” says the superstar.

Speaking about the release date which clashes with Saawariya, Shah Rukh says “We wanted to release Om Shanti Om on Diwali since the film is about celebration of life and happiness. Farah always makes happy films. As a producer, it was very exciting on the sets but it is a secondary film compared to a huge film like Saawariya. It could have been good for business if the release dates had not clashed. But, there is no competition. Sanjay Leela Bhansali has given me Devdas and I consider that film as the highlight of my career. Apart from Salman and Rani the film has two debutants Ranbir and Sonam and I love them. They respect me. They are children of talented stars like Rishi and Neetu Kapoor as well as Anil Kapoor. How can I compete with my own children? I bless them and wish them all the best for their future. There are enough people to see both films. In fact my own son is keen on Saawariya,” he says.

He adds, “My film is based on the industry and I am grateful to everybody including Jeetendra, Amitabh Bachchan, Hema Malini, Rakesh Roshan and all other friends from the industry who agreed to be a part of the film.”

Shah Rukh has developed fabulous abs for the film and went on a diet for four months to get fit for the item number that he has performed in the film. For the first time, the superstar has taken off his shirt on screen. “When Farah insisted that I do this song I told her I would have to work hard on my physique. I didn’t want to do something that I would be ashamed of. Salman and Hrithik were very cooperative. In fact, I showed them my pictures before commencing shooting. They said I was good and needed to improve further. I am just a debutant where physical fitness is concerned. When I see Salman, it encourages me to work harder. I had to take supplements but now I feel physically fit. Now that I have done it, I realise that nothing in life is difficult. My children also liked the abs.” he reveals.

About his debutante co-star, Shah Rukh says, “I feel responsible towards her. She has all the makings of a good star, though she is taller than me. We are big fans of Prakash Padukone and we don’t want him to be let down.

At the music launch of his next big release Om Shanti Om, Shah Rukh - who has specially developed six pack abs for the film – spilled some beans about the much awaited flick that will be locking horns with Saawariya at the box office this Diwali.

On his much appreciated six pack abs…

“Farah wanted me to go shirtless for a song in the film just like John, Hrithik and Salman have done in their movies. For the last four months, I have been working really hard for this and even started taking diet supplements. I used to do 500-700 crunches daily. It helped that I had taken a 3-month break from work during which I concentrated on getting myself into shape.

Now that I am in my 40s, it was a bit difficult for me but I am sure the youngsters will find it a lot easier. My son Aryan gave me the best compliment when he told me that ‘you are not looking fat now’.

Why OSO?

“I was born in 1965 so I grew up watching films of 70s and 80s. My mom was a great film fanatic and used to encourage me a lot to watch films. During that time most of the stars used to overact and Farah thought among the current crop I can do it best. So she selected me for the role. Whenever I was doing any scene for this film, I used to cast my mind back to how people used to act in those days. Kirron Kher helped me a lot in this regard. She is just fantastic in the movie.”

The name game…

“I play two characters in the film – one a 70s character Om Prakash Makhija , a struggler who wants to become an actor but his friend (played by Shreyas Talpade) keeps telling him that he would never make it because of his name which is not ‘filmi’.

My second character (reborn) is called Om Kapoor – a 2007 superstar but without any acting talent. His nickname is called OK because his favourite dialogue in the film is– OK agar koi shot deta hain toh woh ok hota hain.

Deepika’s character is called Shanti and hence the name. She is a damn good actress and people should watch this film for her.”

More about OSO…

“A lot of stars right from 70s till date like Amitabh Bachchan, Jeetendra, Dharmendra, Shabana Azmi and Mithun Chakravarthy have made a special appearance in the film to give it a realistic touch. We genuinely wanted them to be part of the film and all were gracious enough to say yes. According to me, the term ‘Bollywood’ originated because of the 70s style when actors used to sport long locks, bell bottoms which actually made the Hindi film industry famous world over.

I would like to make it clear that this is not a spoof. It’s a comedy which the audience would enjoy just like they did Farah Khan’s first movie Main Hoon Na. It’s a two-and-a-half hour film and though it deals with re-birth, Farah has handled the subject so well that the viewers will not find it boring.”

Music…

“We took help of Pyarelalji to re-create the 70s magic. Vishal-Shekhar have worked very hard on the music of the film. The Dard-e-Disco number will especially appeal to the youngsters since it was made keeping them in mind.

I have been very lucky so far that most of my films have had great music and hopefully this will continue.”

On Salman…

“Salman Khan is one of the prime reasons why Bollywood stars are paying so much attention to fitness. I admire him a lot because of that. And now Hrithik too is doing the same. They are my idols as far as fitness freaks are concerned.”

And finally Saawariya…

“Sanjay Leela Bhansali had given me one of the best films of my career (Devdas) and I am really thankful to him for that. If it was in my hands, I would not have released OSO on the same day as Saawariya because it also features my friends Rani and Salman. Also, the new kids Ranbir and Sonam respect me a lot.

But keeping personal relations aside, OSO is obviously very close to my heart being my film. It is not a big-budgeted film like Saawariya but I know that most people would want to see both films so good luck to all those involved with the two projects.”

Om Shanti Om - Music Review - Passion For Cinema

Om Shanti Om’s music is a delight. One of the most elaborate score from the stable of Vishal-Shekhar(V-S). I truly salute their dexterity and courage with this one. I was waiting to write it off as soon as the promos started but I went back to the songs and started liking them. And this has never happened for a V-S score before.

Though there might be two thoughts behind putting this in the year’s top five, it still can be enjoyed as a total bhelpuri full-on masala Bollywood score.

Of all the surprises (shocks rather) popping out of the Mumbai film machinery off late, one of the top contenders would be the monstrously odd Dard-e-Disco(Sukhwinder Singh, Marianne, Nisha, Caralisa). The moment you hear the phrase a wtf reaction comes free along with. The shocking video doesn’t help much either. Javed Akhtar might be criticized to no end by using stuff like dard-e-disco, sanfransisco, chhabees ko, but the song lies in that weird-ass plane of thought where you don’t minding hanging your intellectual shoes. Its pure guilty pleasure and that very fearless execution will make it popular.

Dastaan-e-Om Shanti Om might sound like a cheap imitation of Karz’s theme song on the outset. And I must say it doesn’t show any drastic changes on repeat hearings as well. The start reminds you of that eternal song from QSQT, Akele hain to kya gham hai(the stanza-phir nahi tootegi..). A pure nostalgia trip without much indulgence. It sounds more like a catalog theme than a big song to look up to. You just might lap it up if you love the whole story-within-a-song structure. And considering there is no imprint of the contemporary orchestration whatsoever, it falls easy on the ears. By easy, I do not mean it is soft, it has its L-P soul very much in place, with the crescendo-ensemble build up and heavy choirs. However, this song gets a new life in the piano-ridden theme music, which makes you wonder if a different approach would have made any difference to the tune.

Dhoom Taana(Abhijeet, Shreya Ghoshal) will be single handedly responsible for whatever fame OSO’s music brings in. It is the singular reason to have faith in the composing and arranging abilities of V-S. The good news is the arrangement is so detailed, the song does not sound like someone is trying to do a tribute. It’s very much living in the seventies of Rajesh Khanna and Mumtaj. Later gives away to a RD Burman jhankar, and drums with sax. You can hear the delightfully done Congo beats at the back. It is very visual. You can call it the most fulfilling track of the lot. Shreya Ghoshal scores over Abhijeet in this masti-masala-filled recipe. I guess I am going overboard but that’s what the song will do to you. You can’t help not going back in your mind to the seventies. The visuals will be a challenge (I was thinking of ‘Jai jai shiv shankar’ all the time, may be the stanza’s latter bits are on an exactly similar beat as jai jai, try singing along the old song against teri preet meri preet and you will know what I mean) and I am keenly looking forward to it. Even if you remove all the historical references, the track would strike you in its stand-alone avatar, and that’s thanks to the time spent on its structuring and layout. More power to the composition to its collage-panorama structure, which I guess is done to show a time-sweep of a star’s career on celluloid.

Ajab Si(KK) would be the only quintessential V-S track here, a clear reminiscence of Chaand ki Roshni from Home Delivery, and it’s very much now. And thanks for that, as too much recreation can damage the whole concept of a tribute. Beautifully written and sung by KK, the song attains a full curve towards the stanzas, a simple tune with mild guitars and sparse tapping. I was pretty surprised to see the promos using this song, especially when the expectations around OSO were to hit you with a thud. Only Rahman is famously known to give us slow numbers for starters, a la Kehna hi kya, Dheeme Dheeme or the eternal Ishq Bina.
It might not be justified to bring in Rahman here, but comparisons are bound to be drawn considering he was offered the film but later couldn’t work out because of ownership issues. Anyways, it’s a blessing for V-S and they have put in an impressive line-up if not something comparable to The Maestro.

Deewangi Deewangi(Shaan, Udit Narayan, Shreya Ghoshal, Sunidhi Chauhan, Rahul Saxena) is the multi-stellar item number here. It retains the festivity mood of dard-e-disco. I guess on screen it would be a John Johnny Janardhan kind of a fun. What works rather ironically for the song is the done-to-death ‘put your hands in the air and say” routine. You have to hear the song to realize how it works. This is one song where you see a happy marriage of old and new arrangement. The wondrous Urdu punch line (I would refrain from guessing it without cracking it completely) is another case of ‘its so good that I don’t know what it means’ magic.

Main Agar Kahoon(Sonu Nigam, Shreya Ghoshal), sadly does not fall in the festivities. Sappily sung by the saccharine king, Sonu Nigam, reminds you of those old music videos on TV, the new year ones. I would rather give it a skip. It might work later considering what happened in the case of other songs could happen here as well, but as of now, it sucks, to put it simply.

Jag Soona Soona Lage(Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Richa Sharma) starts off with the now typical sufi aalaap by Richa Sharma(ni main samajh gayee). You have no two thoughts in your head you will soon hear Rahat Fateh Ali Khan’s vocals who is the industry’s current favorite for climactic filmy song situations. It’s the point where the heroine happens to strand the hero in midst of the whole mediocrity, and all walls close in on him. You need a song, you get it. Full on melodrama, a little of Mahesh-Bhatt-Avatar-Gill-Arun-Bakshi road singing, even has those dramatic interludes amidst the static rhythm pattern where you see the whole sequence of the story running back to our currently-dil-toota-hero. Considering Khan’s voice has been used to better effects in recent past (Main Jahaan Rahoon, Bol na halke halke) the song should have been nothing less than brilliant, which sadly it isn’t. A repeat wonder, don’t be surprised if the song rings in your head even at the minutely valid reasons(like a girl turning away from you at the café).

Recommended. If you wrote Vishal-Shekhar of Cash off, listen to this one, its quite literally a reincarnation!

Expectations. Expectations. And some more expectations. This is how one looks forward to the music of Om Shanti Om from which one expects nothing but the best. And why not? After all:

a) This is the biggest ever film starring Shahrukh Khan
b) This is the second directorial venture for Farah Khan who made a smashing debut with Main Hoon Naa c) The film has created huge buzz accompanied by immense hype ever since it was launched
d) Vishal-Shekhar and Javed Akhtar saab are expected to bring on table a massy popular score
e) Last but not the least, the film travels decades which makes one look forward to variety in the soundtrack.

Are these expectations met? Well, very much as each of the seven unique tracks bring on a variety that makes Om Shanti Om a winner all the way.

It is a truly unconventional beginning to Om Shanti Om as instead of an expected ‘Beat-one-Beat-two’ beginning from Vishal-Shekhar, one gets to hear a rather serene ‘Aankhon Mein Teri‘ which turns out to be an extremely soulful hear. On hearing it initially, it is the sheer ‘different’ factor due to which it takes some time to follow the composition. But once you have heard it closely with lights switched off and no interference around you, ‘Aankhon Mein Teri‘ turns out to be an irresistible piece of melody that lingers on for hours.

There are number of factors which go in making ‘Aankhon Mein‘ a song that would be remembered for time to come. First and foremost it is the re-discovery of Vishal-Shekhar who create an unconventional tune that breaks the norms which they had themselves set for them. Furthermore, Vishal himself writes lyrics for this track which turns out to be a unique experience since it shows the sensitive romantic side of him. But the biggest of all is K.K. who showcases once again that he is THE most versatile singer who we have in the Bollywood musical scene today!

Well, those who love the dance numbers coming from Vishal-Shekhar don’t have to wait for long with the arrival of ‘Dard-E-Disco‘. This is the very track which is much talked about for Shahrukh Khan’s ‘perfect-six-abs’ and unlike ‘Aankhon Mein‘ which grows immensely only after a few hearings, it is an instant hit from the GO. Reminding of the style, rhythm and the funk of ‘Kaal Dhamaal‘ [Kaal], ‘Dard E Disco‘ is a ‘jump-on-the-dance-floor’ number which has a Persian touch to it even as overall feel of the song stays on to be Western.

From the title of the song, one would have expected ‘Dard-E-Disco‘ to belong to the 80s era with a Mithun hangover it but that’s not the case as the song turns out to be pretty contemporary. Sukhwinder Singh is in his full elements for this track that has some spicy writing by Javed Akhtar saab. Marianne, Nisha and Caralisa come together for backup vocals who give the song a perfect disco feel. Later in the album arrives the ‘remix version’ which makes for a justified presence due to the song’s theme and keeps the entertainment alive.

One would have expected the graph of the album to at maximum stay steady after ‘Aankhon Mine‘ and ‘Dard-E-Disco‘ but to one’s pleasant surprise, it shoots up amazingly with ‘Deewangi Deewangi‘ which hooks you on within first one minute itself. A sure shot chartbuster which could well have been the opening number for the film’s promotion, ‘Deewangi Deewangi‘ is what qualifies as a trademark number which could have been lapped up by Yash Raj Films or Dharma Productions.

Coming together of Shaan, Udit Narayan, Shreya Ghoshal, Sunidhi Chauhan and Rahul Saxena (heard in Indian Idol) ensures that there is not a single dull moment in this instant-attention-grabbing track. Boasting of the innocence in melody that was witnessed in the 70s and now presented in the 21st century ‘avtar’ with a fusion of ‘qawalli’, ‘bhangra’ and western arrangements, ‘Deewangi Deewangi‘ that also incorporates the sound of Om Shanti Om would definitely lit up the screen when it is played. It’s ‘Rainbow Mix’ only confirms the thought as it helps in consolidating the sound of the song.

If you have ever been in love, you wouldn’t have missed out the dancing-couple-on-a-glass-floor gift item that has a sweet sounding tinkling sound which compliments their moves! This is the sound that marks the beginning of ‘Main Agar Kahoon‘ which reminds one of the 60s era when songs like these were in vogue. Picturised on the likes of Rajendra Kumar and Shammi Kapoor, they were mostly sung by Late Mohd. Rafi.

This is the very reason why Sonu Nigam has been roped in to croon ‘Main Agar Kahoon‘ which required the kind of rendition which would succeed in getting you nostalgic about the music of the era gone by. With Shreya Ghoshal in tow who is just the right fit for a song belonging to this genre, ‘Main Agar Kahoon‘ gives a completely different flavor to the album by bringing some ‘thehrav‘ to it after a rocking outing experienced in last few songs.

Names like Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Richa Sharma are good enough reasons to expect a quality offering from Vishal-Shekhar in the song ‘Jag Soona Soona Lage‘. Written by guest lyricist Kumaar, this painful yet mellow track about separation has it’s beginning borrowed from the opening sound of ‘Main Agar Kahoon‘. Both the singers are highly competent in this beautifully written number that shows an altogether different facet of the composer-duo. A track which has a thorough Indian base to it and makes for a passionate outing, expect it to make multiple appearance during the film’s narrative.

It’s time for the world of ‘Tohfa Tohfa Tohfa‘ [Tohfa] as ‘dhols’ and ‘ghunghroos’ come together in unison to create the sound of late 70s and early 80s. With a Lakshmikant-Pyayelal patent all over ‘Dhoom Taana‘, it is only consolidated further as Shreya Ghoshal sings the song in a style that was made famous by yesteryear singer S. Janaki in Jeetendra-Sridevi-Jaya Pradha films. Roping in of Abhijeet too seems to be done with a purpose since it only brings the nostalgia of Kishore Kumar in spite of no conscious effort by the singer to do so.

All through this vintage song, the ‘dhol’ beats accompanied by the chorus of ‘Dhoom Taana‘ is hard to be missed though there is a shift in mood mid-way with rock-n-roll. Just recently there was news around Deepika Padukone shaking a leg with Sunil Dutt, Jeetendra and Rajesh Khanna, courtesy SFX. Well, ‘Dhoom Taana‘ seems to be just the candidate for that setting! A winner which should definitely have the house on fire as it unfolds on the big screen. Especially watch out for the crescendo towards the song’s end.

Finally comes a track which seems to be set in accordance to the reincarnation theme of the film. Set as a tribute to ‘Ek Haseena Thi Ek Deewana Tha‘ [Karz] with even the lyrics taking a cue from the classic track by Lakshmikant-Pyarelal, ‘Dastaan-E-Om Shanti Om‘ is set in exactly the same story telling mode. The styling of this Shaan rendered track follows the same mode as one expects a high voltage dramatic narration when the song is on.

High on orchestra, ‘Dastaan-E-Om Shanti Om‘ is an elaborate number which has a lot to convey through it’s lyrics by Javed Akhtar saab. With its ‘mukhda’ based on the film’s theme music, the song makes an appearance again towards the end of the album. In it’s ‘remix version’ as ‘Dastaan - The Dark Side Mix‘, it is pepped up further with additional arrangements.

Another remix track which takes the album towards its completion is ‘Om Shanti Om - Medley Mix’ which basically is an amalgamation of all the tracks from the film presented in a ‘club-mix’ avtar. A good way to wind up the album. Finally comes a minute long theme piece which is titled ‘Om Shanti Om - Themes’. Played on a piano, it leaves a lasting impact even as one can revisit the sound in at least half the tracks in the album.

Credit must go to Farah Khan who mixes the commercial elements of the movie with an inherent class which she wanted to lay out in the soundtrack for Om Shanti Om. This is why a fine balancing act is done in the album with hardcore massy tracks like ‘Deewangi Deewangi‘ [best of the lot], ‘Dhoom Taana‘ and ‘Dard-E-Disco‘ presented along with touching tracks like ‘Aankhon Mein Teri’, ‘Main Agar Kahoon’ and ‘Jag Soona Soona Lage‘. And then there is always a ‘Dastaan-E-Om Shanti Om’ to bring the nostalgia of ‘Ek Haseena Thi‘ [Karz’].

Om Shanti Om is easily one of the most complete scores by Vishal-Shekhar and Javed Akhtar.

She walked down the aisle on a Jet Airways’ afternoon flight from Bombay to Delhi with eyes so large that one could swim in them for a lifetime. Every step she took towards me, my heart skipped ten beats. I tried to look away to break her spell on me, but unknown to me a war was raging inside me between my brain and my heart, surprisingly the heart won, and alas I could not look away. At that moment I became acutely aware of the possibility that time might stand still in a moment or two. The woman walking towards me might take my breath away. Just when I had given up all hope of surviving, I witness a demonstration of Newton’s Law (Action and Reaction are equal and opposite). She dropped down on the aisle seat a row ahead of me with a look that said, “I surrender Oh handsome stranger, put me under house arrest and throw away the keys ”. Destiny had made us the companion of the aisle. We were locked diagonally across from each other and as luck would have it both were wearing Marc Jacobs’ fragrance.

She turned around and started talking to an associate from her industry coincidentally sitting in the aisle seat ahead of me (luck it seems was on my side today). Her gesture touched the cockles of my heart. I took that as a clue and started talking to Neeraj my rep in India who was sitting across the aisle in a seat behind her. The small talked served as a facade to check each other out. I liked her off white dress with black embroidery/shadow work. Her trousers looked like some kind of a pajama ? Maybe that is some new fashion in India, but at this point I did not care. I was happy that I was fortunate enough to look into her eyes and see her spirit. I saw that she was a very sincere and decent person. Right away I recognized that she was a person who deserved someone better than me. She deserved someone who would give her his soul. Unfortunately I have no soul to give, my soul lays with the person that I have given it to and she like Kahlil Gibran’s Salma rests far from our maddening world. Today I can provide my company, some humor, some charm, some conversation, but don’t ask for true love, because that just happens once or so in a lifetime.

I saw the disappointment in her eyes when the glow of the mutual feelings on my face started to fade away. She wondered what went wrong. I so wish I could explain that she deserved something more. I wish I could tell her that there are some things that don’t happen everyday. Take for example CDI. It is an amazing landmark movie, but you cannot expect all future SRK movies to be another CDI. Future SRK movies like OSO will be fun and entertaining, and all the things we expect from SRK, but don’t expect CDI all the time. CDI is once in a lifetime kind of a movie, SRK thankfully has given many profound ground-breaking movies such as CDI, Don, Kank, Swades, Devdas, & DDLJ, but all movies cannot be as weighty. Movies are meant to be an escape. They are meant to take our mind away from every day pressures. They are meant to make us feel good. Movies are meant to be enjoyed.

When the plane landed in Delhi. I helped her get her bags from the luggage bin. She saw me eyeing at the filmfare tucked into one of the pockets of her bags. I asked her, “You like movies”, She said , “Yes”. I told her, “Then watch OSO, it will be totally paisa wasool ”. I told her to take care and walked away.

Farah Khan will recreate the magic of 70’s by presenting her new girl, Deepika Padukone romancing with the 70’s legends Sunil Dutt, Rajesh Khanna and Jeetendra in her forthcoming flick, Om Shanti Om. Farah Khan has left no stone unturned to give realistic essence to the film. All this was made possible with SFX.

Farah added that SFX had been used in the song where Deepika dances with Sunil Dutt, Jeetendra and Rajesh Khanna. Deepika plays the character of a star from the 70’s era, and thus, dances around the leading actors of that decade. Farah is very excited about seeing the legendary heroes dancing again on screen.

A similar sequence was created in the opening scene Jaan-e-Mann, directed by Farah’s husband, Shirish Kunder, where Salman receives an award and is surrounded by the actors of the 70’s.

The promos of Shah Rukh Khan’s Om Shanti Om release today, and it’s hard to miss the actor in his bare-chested glory — six-pack abs and a lean, mean and toned body.

Here, the actor talks about his abs, being compared to Salman Khan and why he won’t kiss his leading ladies.

Now that you’ve gone bare-chested, will you ever do a full monty?

No. I will not do anything I’m not comfortable doing. I know I’d be uncomfortable doing certain things so I don’t do them. I feel the same way about lovemaking and kissing scenes. I have never done a kissing scene before and I wouldn’t do it even today.

How open were you with the idea of going bare-chested?

Farah (Khan) and I discussed my look in the song Dard-E-Disco but I told her I’d shoot for it only if I managed to build a presentable body. That was the understanding.

Om Shanti Om is a film is about stars in 2007-08, where everybody has a good body so it’s a part of the character.

No reservations about going bare-chested?

No. The idea was to have the body looking good and everybody took a decision on that. They said it looked pleasant and nice, added to the film and I got into my character. We all agreed it was fine.

So how did you do it?

I took a couple of months off, worked out every day, controlled my diet, had lots of aminos (proteins) and got the six-pack abs. Aminos are purer form of proteins which help in building muscles faster.

Did you feel awkward while shooting the song?

Though it’s Farah’s film and my home production, I have never done this kind of thing before, so initially I felt a bit odd. I was shy at first but then people joked about it. I had shown Hrithik some pictures and he was very encouraging, so I was fine. I am shy of dancing too.

How long did it take you to build your body?

It took me two and a half to three months. I have been working out for the last three years. My body didn’t need to look round and muscular. It just needed to look lean. I worked on my abs in London quite a bit and controlled my food. It’s very important to control your diet and fortunately for me, I am not a foodie. I have always eaten simple from childhood. I eat grilled food with minimum oil or roti, some rice and tandoori food.

Will you hold on to your abs now?

Yes. I would like to retain this buffed up body and abs. I am too old to be trying to build up muscle. During the shooting of Chak De, I played hockey. Now I have started playing soccer. Games are the best way to keep a body like this.

With your new body do you consider yourself hot?

I have never thought of myself like that. I am not vain. Many people thought I looked sexy in Chak De but that doesn’t mean I will sport the look forever. If a look works for a film it’s fine. I won’t do photo-sessions or ads without my clothes because those are not roles I am playing. Being bare-chested is not a part of my USP.

How did Gauri and your children like your new body?

They like it. My son (Aryan) likes it a lot. In fact, he has a body like that – well-built and lean as he’s into sports.

There will be comparisons with Salman.

I went and showed my body to Salman. He’s encouraged and helped me a lot. Initially, when I started exercising, I would ask Prashant to take tips from Salman. He tells me what to do.

Sanju and Hrithik have also given me lots of tips. There can be no comparison with Salman. He’s the godfather of bodybuilding — rather, the Dadasaheb Phalke of body builders in India, as he made the country aware of body- building. I am not as good as he is. Salman’s got a fantastic physique.

Which actors ‘bare’ well?

Salman, Hrithik, John Abraham and Arjun Rampal. They have been doing it for years and comfortably.

Here’s the official statement

The star cast of OM SHANTI OM continues to swell. We’re well aware of topnotch stars like Sanjay Dutt, Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan and many others featuring in a pivotal song in this keenly anticipated film, but there’s more to look forward to. SRK and director Farah Khan have roped in Akshay Kumar, Abhishek Bachchan and Hrithik Roshan as well, not for the song in question, but a scene preceding the talked-about star-studded song.

However, the three actors have yet to shoot for the film. “That’s true,” Farah confirms the development. Why aren’t the three part of the famed song? “In the film, the three are the final contenders for the Filmfare Best Actor Award and since they lose the award to SRK, it would look odd if we showed them sing and dance in the post-awards celebration party-song,” she clarifies.

Meanwhile, SRK and Farah have decided to launch the music of the film with pomp and gaiety on 18th September at a suburban hotel.

Wait for hearing the music of one of the biggest films of 2007 would finally be over in around a month from now.

OM SHANTI OM, an extravagant offering from Shahrukh Khan and Farah Khan, is aiming for a November 9th release. The film’s promotion is all set to get started in a week from now while the music album is expected to hit the stands somewhere around middle of September.

Music of film has been in news ever since the project was announced. To begin with A.R. Rahman was finalised as a composer. Later due to certain differences over holding of rights, replacement for Rahman was sought and duo of Vishal-Shekhar was instead roped in. Also, services of Pyarelal [of Lakshmikant-Pyarelal duo] were sought to arrange one of the songs from the film.

The latest addition to the stellar cast of Om Shanti Om is Hrithik Roshan. If sources are to be believed, Shah Rukh Khan and Farah Khan have already spoken to the actor about this special sequence, which will be shot later this month. However, they are yet to decide on the shooting dates, as Hrithik is currently busy filming for Jodha Akbar in Karjat.

The actor will play himself and will be seen gracing an awards gala in the film alongside Shah Rukh. The sequence will see both the actors contending for the Best Actor award at the popular Filmfare Awards. A source informs, Hrithik has agreed to do the scene and it’s going to be a brief appearance. Farah will shoot with him once he is back from Karjat.

Set in the tinsel town of the ’70s, the film traces Shah Rukh’s journey from a struggling actor to a superstar. Akshay Kumar and Abhishek Bachchan will also feature alongside Hrithik and Shah Rukh during the sequence.

It so happened that our distributors wanted us to release the film in Diwali and November 9 happens to be a Friday so it has again worked out well for me.”

Farah Khan feels all multiples of nine have worked in her favour. “I have also been told that now that number 10 is going to be lucky for me too from 2008. But I don’t get carried away or get dependent on these number games. I remember one numerologist called me and told me to add and extra A in the name of my first film Main Hoon Naa and even tried to scare me by saying the film might not work. I don’t believe in all this so I didn’t change the spelling. Even Shah Rukh Khan does not believe in all these number games. Finally it’s your talent and hard work that pays off,” she says.

Incidentally, Farah Khan’s first directorial venture, Main Hoon Naa released on April 30, 2004 which again totals upto 9.

Numerologist Suniiel Naik says,” Farah is born on the 9th and 2007 is a lucky year as it belongs to people of number nine. As for the release date of her film OSO on November 9, 2007, it is definitely going to do good business at the box office. Besides the number nine, numbers like five and six are also lucky for Farah. Farah Khan is eagerly anticipating the release of her second film,Om Shanti Om and her triplets.

The promos of Om Shanti Om came out last week and Farah Khan’s excited with the response. Apart from fine-tuning the film’s release (November 9), she’s also busy making constant trips to the gynaecologist to check up on her triplets, due in early February. She tells us how she’s been coping!

What’s the response to the promos?

Great! There have been mixed reactions, but nobody is indifferent. Our tagline is catchy – ‘For some dreams, one lifetime is not enough.’ It’s a very edgy, retro, new age promo done by two youngsters, Amit and Mukul, from Trigger Happy.

It shows glimpses of Shah Rukh (Khan) as a junior artiste and Deepika (Padukone) as a big star. SRK called up from London to say that the Eros website (distributing OSO), which features the promo, has got a record number of hits.

What made you sign a newcomer opposite SRK?

We didn’t want a big star. We wanted to present the actress as a big star of the ’70s, so any contemporary actress would not go down well.
Deepika plays a top South Indian star a la Hema Malini, called Shantipriya.Deepika has the looks, carriage, poise and smile — just like Hema Malini — and doesn’t look vulgar in the cabaret songs.

What do you like most about Deepika?

Apart from the first look, which I loved, Deepika’s a superb dancer, has the looks, body and a mobile face. She will become a great commercial heroine and we need actresses like her. In spite of being a teenager, Deepika has a lot of maturity. She’s dignified beyond her age.

There are tremendous expectations about OSO. Are you nervous?

I wasn’t nervous earlier, but I’m beginning to feel the heat now. We didn’t expect the film to get so hyped. It’s scary, yet exciting as it’s gone beyond our control now.

The kind of money offered to distribute the film and the reactions to the promos are overwhelming. From today, we launch our website too (omshantifilm.com), which will have everything from the film’s pictures to information, downloads and blogs.

Saawariya is also releasing on November 9. How do you feel about that?

I wish ours had been a solo release. I’m sure even Sanjay (Leela Bhansali) would have wanted it that way. Both films are of different genres. Saawariya should do well, but Om Shanti Om should do better!

Are you preparing for your new arrivals too?

Yes. I’m thrilled, pukey, tired and excited! I am not reading up on books on motherhood, as they don’t help. I have done some really difficult things, but I didn’t know being a mother would be so tiring. Most times I’m flat out on my back resting.

Cash on my mind, making money all the time….’ may well be true of Shekhar and his partner Vishal. Just eight years into the industry and the composer duo has become a permanent fixture with YRF. What’s more, they have also edged out Main Hoon Na Anu Malik from the Farah Khan camp to bag Om Shanti Om. Their kitty also includes the Amitabh Bachchan film Bhootnath and Alladin in which the actor will be singing a couple of songs for them.
We meet the rocking duo on the sets of Zee’s Sa Re Ga Ma Pa on which they are the judges. Two minutes into the conversation, a youngster comes running to the dais to present a Mont Blanc pen to Shekhar. “I am a fan of yours and have travelled two hours just to meet you,” he says, pocketing an autograph. Excerpts:
Like the catchy title track of Cash, are all the songs in the film fast-paced?
Vishal: Yes, it’s total club music. Cash is a fast-paced action-packed film. It’s in the genre of a comic book thriller and the songs are instrumental in driving the action. There are six numbers and each one has been composed in a different style. The title track is Surf music, a kind of rap with some melody in it, `Na pooncho…’ has a retro tune with a modern Reggae tone and Latino-rap which probably is used in Hindi music for the first time , `Reham kare…’ is a Sufi song with ragamuffin music and `Mind-blowing mahiya…’ is a full techno number. It is an ‘item’ number for kids that is getting a good response ,while `Naughty naughty…’ is Bhojpuri hip-hop mixed with bhangra. The song was released last Sunday and it is gradually catching up. In totality, the album is not too heavy in content or groove but cut-to-chase which is the philosophy of the film.
Shekhar: The last time we had composed for an action film was for Dus, but that was laced with emotional content. This is out- and-out action and Anubhav Sinha’s brief was to give dance music . We had a blast working on this album. Are you happy with the way the music is being promoted?
Vishal: Cash marks the entry of a new company, Big Music (floated by Reliance) into the market. It’s their first release and that’s why the promotion is not upto the mark. However, their intention is good. It takes time to learn the ropes. Never mind the hype or lack of it, the music is strong. At the end of the day what matters is the number of units sold and we are getting a positive response.

You have done the score for Farah Khan’s Om Shanti Om. For one song she has roped in many stars to perform. How do you feel about it?
Vishal: Working with Farah Khan was a very good experience. She has great ideas, is aware of rhythmic patterns and is clear about the kind of sounds she wants in the interlude section. We composed the score very fast in over a week! It’s a pretty complete soundtrack with two distinct flavours, modern and retro. Farah told us that she wanted a special party song which would be picturised on five or six big stars. She is such a lovable person and has so much goodwill in the industry that around 40 stars have performed in the song.

This is the first time you are doing a Shah Rukh Khan film. Did you have that in mind while composing?
Shekhar: The thing with Shah Rukh Khan is that he can carry any kind of music from hip-hop to rock to pop

Young new faces coming in to Bollywood have been impressive. Jiah Khan stunned in Nishabd. Asin stunned Aamir on the sets of Ghajini. Now it’s time for actress Deepika Padukone to get her share of the newcomer’s limelight. In her first public appearance that is remembered on Koffee with Karan, she seemed to be just the recipe for sizzling the screen. Armed with gorgeous looks, she seemed to be taking in her first steps into the industry well.

While she is already hand in mouth over her experience working Baadshah Shahrukh Khan, it seems that once the movie is released she will be the most talked about – for a while atleast. Her look in Om Shanthi Om is impressive as seen on Koffee With Karan. What’s more impressive is that she is young and therefore raring to go. She saw Shahrukh Khan in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai when she all but eleven years old and now she acting opposite him 10 years later. Luck surely has come her way.

All said and done, the actress has seemed to start on the right foot with her debut film. Don’t be surprised if she gets producers running to her with offers even before the movie releases. The first look of the film shows her in excellent light.

The Economics Of A Shah Rukh Khan Starrer, Using The ´Om Shanti Om´ Model!

It pays to be a Shah Rukh Khan, more today than ever before! Why? Because Shah Rukh as an actor-producer is minting money like nobody else! On a very realistic estimate, his home production, ‘Om Shanti Om’, starring himself, must have cost Rs. 35 crore to make. Now to the revenues. There are several corporates bidding for the worldwide distribution rights of the film, directed by Farah Khan, but the highest bid is by Eros and is said to be in the region of Rs. 55 crore. Add to that around Rs. 6 to 8 crore for audio rights and another Rs. 14-15 crore for satellite and other electronic rights, and you have a recovery of over Rs. 75 crore on the table, before release! That means, it’s a straight doubling of investment and even more.

This arithmetic is making other top actors go crazy. Reportedly, a couple of them have decided to further hike their already high prices. But everybody needs to understand some things about Shah Rukh Khan and ‘Om Shanti Om’ clearly. One is that Shah Rukh Khan’s popularity in the Overseas territory is unmatched. Therefore, the price an SRK starrer commands for Overseas circuit is one that no other hero can dream of. Secondly, on the satellite and DVD circuit too, Shah Rukh Khan is the king and he has no close competition.

Given this mathematics, it doesn’t make economic sense for Shah Rukh Khan to act in any other banner’s film except his own. Of course, exceptions for close friends like Karan Johar and Aditya Chopra will always be made.

She is supremely talented and has possibly the best sense of humor in the entire film fraternity… she has the ability to laugh at her herself and others… Karan’s first guest is the adorable Farah Khan. 2.7 billion people in the world know Tom Cruise… 3.2 billion people in the world know Shah Rukh Khan… and of course according to Karan his biggest achievement really is that he has been on his show 4 times… the super star Shah Rukh Khan is his second guest. Also, joining them is the absolutely stunning… the heroine of Om Shanti Om, who is on her way to becoming a super star… none other than the gorgeous Deepika Padukone. Make sure you catch Shah Rukh, Farah and Deepika in this week’s piping hot episode of Koffee with Karan on Sunday, August 26th at 9 p.m. on Star One and Star World.

Karan: Welcome back to Koffee with Karan… how does it feel… it is your third appearance?
Farah: Fourth… if you are not counting when I was a judge in the last season…

Karan: Oh right… you judged the finale episode…
Farah: Ya… I have been here almost as much as you…

Karan: A big event that has transformed your life is your wedding…. That happened 2 years ago?
Farah: Ya… 2 years…

Karan: I thought it would change you? You, tell me… has it changed you?
Farah: ahhhhhh… has it?

Karan: I am asking you… has it made you softer, calmer?
Farah: I don’t think it has made me calmer for sure… but, yes it has given me a perspective in life… and I do enjoy staying at home a lot more now…

Karan: Yes… you have someone to come home to
Farah: Ya…. I like being around the house… doing homely things… not just being on set so much… but, I still enjoyed making my second movie… a little more than I enjoyed making my first one… when I wasn’t married then…

Karan: So, cool you look… new hair do… muscles… 6 pack… I heard
SRK: 4
Farah: 4 have come… 2 to go… SRK: I am still working on the last two…

Karan: What made you make this change?
SRK: My son feels I am fat…

Karan:: He thinks you are fat?
SRK: He thinks I am fat… He beat up a girl… because, first she called me an asshole… beep beep… then she said I look very ugly on KBC… sorry Star… he didn’t react… he controlled himself… finally when she said, your father is fat… he kicked her… so I got angry with him… and he said, Papa, you know what, it is not her fault…its you… why are you fat? because she said, ugly, I didn’t mind… you looked handsome on KBC… you are not an asshole I know…. You are a cool guy but you are fat Papa.

Karan: He thinks you are fat…
SRK: Just imagine… what he thinks about you and Farah? Lets not get into that… Farah: Thanks… Karan: Laughs….

Karan: Are you nervous at all?
Deepika: I am very nervous…

Karan: Was it the same kind of nervousness when you were offered this film… you had to work with Shah Rukh, with Farah… were you completely like all nerves the first day…
Deepika: It was the same kind of nervousness; especially on the first day… although Farah went all out to make me feel comfortable… she introduced me to Shah Rukh well in advance…

Karan: And everyone tells that he is a terrific co-star …
Deepika: He is fantastic to work with…

Karan: It feels special that you are a part of such a monstrous project?
Deepika: Yes and we have almost come to the end of it
SRK: I thought Karan was saying you are part of such a monster (pointing to Farah)
Deepika: No, she was wonderful…

Alright, so the hardcore Urdu couplet that kick starts the promo of Farah Khan’s Om Shanti Om rewinds you back to the sixties social, a la Yash Chopra’s Waqt where the poetic meaning forewarned us, as to what is going to follow. Well, it goes without saying that the premise of this hugely mounted entertainer has movies as its backdrop. Shah Rukh is a junior artiste with star-gaze as his only respite; while ravishing Deepika Padukone is the proverbial amply-endowed star of the sixties-seventies, with a smile that kisses her dimples like the dewdrops sliding on a nubile flower petal.

The dream girl is off to a premiere of her big ticket flick while love-struck SRK (in a check coat) is driven away by guards forcefully. Montages of transition follow. A convertible biggie car stops with a screech. ‘STAR’ shines on its number plate. SRK has a Filmfare award in his hand while Padukone draped in a Kanjeevram sleeveless sari dances away to glory on a big dhol (obviously it’s an ode to Sridevi of Himmatwala). Helen is not to be left behind, as totally transformed Deepika oozes out of a life like cage draped in the Monika ensemble. Phew!

SRK on his part showcases many of the characters that he has played in his career. There are traces of Raj-Rahul as he dances in a lavish party, sings the open-chested romantic duets, rides a macho bike, the blood smeared Baazigar who also dabbles in Devdas for a while. There’s a Shah Rukh Khan voiceover that takes this ninety second promo forward proclaiming adherence to escapist cinema. Yes, no bad endings for this one. “Picture abhi khatam nahin hui hai,” he says in an inebriated tone. Well right!

The Om Shanti Om first look promo is exciting, grand, opulent and surely spells magnificence. All you guys who missed SRK’s star-power in Chak De India, it seems the king won’t disappoint you in this one. Deepika Padukone is undoubtedly the find of the decade. She Rocks! In fact she overpowers everything that comes in her way. Only disappointment was Shreyas Talpade’s hackneyed hairstyle. A let down one must say. Even Shah Rukh’s Devdas act left something to be desired. Nevertheless, the promo makes you very curious as to what the whole film must be like. Let the fireworks begin….
